One day, i was wondering if it could be possible to make some money “passively” while walking.
If you think about it, it would be awesome to get money just to walk around. After some research, and some trial and errors, I have created a list of apps that could help you get a little extra money while you are walking about.
However, you shouldn’t be expecting these apps/ideas to replace your regular day jobs, but they can help you pay for a nice dinner with your significant other, bring your kids to the movie, or even help yourself fund your emergency fund!

Let’s take a look, shall we.

SweatCoins

This is one cool app that pays for your steps with a CryptoCurrency.
You shouldn’t be afraid of that. However, it doesn’t pay you to walk indoor, only outdoor. Their crypto algorithm will make sure of that.
However, it’s somewhat frustrating to see your 10 000 steps giving you less then the full amount. But, they are working on updating their algorithm to make sure that you will not loose your steps inside.

As such, for 1000 steps you get 1.00 SweatCoins minus 0.05% commission. It’s not that bad, you are getting money for something you would do anyways!

Some of the prizes they offer for your SweatCoins are 1000USD and iphones. It’s a great way to freely get some money.

United Healthcare motion

Ever heard about the FIT process? Me neither…
but here’s what it means Frequency, Intensity and Tenacity. And United Healthcare Motion is a platform that use that process to pay you to walk. How doesn’t work? The first concept is that it’s a form of insurance, they will credit you 55$ for a fitness tracker.

Also, you will be rewarded points to reach you FIT goals:

  • Frequency: 500 steps in 7 minutes for 6 times a day;
  • Intensity: 3000 steps in 30 minutes; and
  • Tenacity: 10000 steps per day.

And, you don’t have nothing to do, the data will be synced from your tracker to the apps, which is both available for IOS and Android.
Where it becomes interesting is that all those points can sum up to a thousand (1000$) per year that will be deposited in an HRA or an HSA of your choice, four times per year. And that means, less investment from your own pockets! Another good point is that, contrary to some other programs, your points will never expire.

Nomad Technologies

This one is somewhat special and will transform you in something like a moving ad board.
Nomad Technologies are on the lookout for Nomads, people that are willing to walk in crowded place such as downtown, sport events, festivals or any other form of social events.
And the job is not hard, you just need to be willing to wear your Ipad on your backpack and display ads served by Nomad technologies. Quite simple. In addition, you will be required to answer small questionnaire on people reactions and reception of certain ads.

Also, the income you will get will be from 10$ to 20$ per hour depending on your location and how crowded the area is. Obviously, the company tracks their Nomads to fix their pay rate accordingly. But, if you think about it, if you were to go to that sport event or festival anyways, why not get the easy extra money?

Achievement

This is a app that pays you to walk and stay fit.
Achievement connects with various other apps, such as Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, AppleHealth and many more to transform your hard training and walking into points. These points can then be redeemed for cash or transferred to Paypal.

What makes this app special is that it will reward you not only for your walking and other training, but also for some of your good habits such as logging your meal or meditation.
Another concept that put this app in a different category is that you can give your “points” to a charity instead. It’s not that bad to give to others!

CharityMiles

Disclaimer: This app will not pay you for your steps. Instead, they will pay the charity you choose. It’s a bit different then other apps, but it’s good to know that your hard work is not done for nothing and that you are also helping others.

StepBet

As the name suggest, StepBet, is a betting app. You need to step some goals first and then you bet on your success on being able to achieve your goal. To help you achieve your goal, and to monitor you, this app will connect to some other app/tracker such as Garmin and FiTbit.
Also, you need to understand that this is betting, it’s not directly getting paid. To get your money, your bet must be successful. As such, it has a certain amount of risk, because it’s a bet and you need to reach your target goal at least 6 time a week.

BetterPoints

This app is probably one of the best walking apps in this list. However, it’s only availlable to my UK Friends. I certainly hope that something like that would get to Canada.

BetterPoints is backed by real money, that is provided through local council or public health bodies in the UK. Not only do you help yourself, but the information is used by those public agencies to get anonymised data about the lifestyle of people. This in turn help them provide better services for their people.

The End

You can expect more and more of those application and program start because there is a high demand by people to set goals and to get rewarded for achieving them.
Walking is good for your health. But now, it can also be good for your wallet’s health.

Start walking, start earning!

Keep the dream alive.

However, for some people giving to charity is as important as any other line in their budget. As such, it’s a great addition to the repertoire of money making ideas for those people.
