A Bit of History

Knowing the history and context can help a lot in difficult situation. Although in this case it’s not that difficult, it will help you understand the complete picture.

Introduced in 2011 by Nest Labs, the Nest learning thermostat was developed by a guy, Tony Fadell, when he found no acceptable solution, in the thermostat market, for the vacation home he was building. As such, Nest Labs developed a programmable, learning, Wi-Fi enabled solution that provided more functionality then it’s counterparts.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2014, the new start-up is bought by Google. However it was kept as a separate entity to keep the development split from Google Home Automation division. After several years of Nest being an “independent” entity inside Google, it’s finally integrated within its new home automation group.

Being a Google product, you can count on them to make sure that the best innovation is yet to come!

What is the Google Nest Solution?

The Google Nest solution is actually the name given to the Smart home automation and home security solution from Google. It’s really easy to install and use. And, there are enough smart devices from that solution to keep your internal nerd and geek happy.

Although their most famous smart device is their Learning Thermostat, it’s not the only one. Over the years, they have developed a wide range of product that work seamlessly in the same ecosystem, including home security smart devices. The great innovation behind the product combined with, great product life and third party integration offers the customer a lot of possible customization.

They also focus on ease of use and user friendliness, from installation to smart device management, which give them great praise from the public. Also, smart devices have some learning abilities to learn your routine, what you and your family look like and how you speak and sound to be able to identify you. All this information is integrated to make sure that the Google Nest home automation system operates according to your lifestyle.

  • The high number of smart devices might overwhelm you.

The Google Nest Features

No Need to Rush

Are you pissed at your current home security system that gives you 3.5 second to enter your code when you come home, otherwise the alarm starts screaming? With Nest, you don’t need to have only those 3.5 second, you can set up the timer to the time you want.
Also, when Nest sense that you have left the house but that your alarm has not been activated, it will send you a reminder to activate it.

Google Nest Key fobs

Give one of those key fobs to people you trust and set a schedule on when they can access your house. Very useful for your dog walker to bring back your dog at a set time. You’ve lost a key fob?
Don’t worry, the application can disable them.
No security issue!

With a subscription to Nest Aware, your camera will start to learn who are your family members and who are strangers. Based on your routine, it will also learn when there is supposed to be activity in and around the house. All of this learning will help in the reduction of false alarm notification that you will receive.

One of the Google Nest security system biggest advantage is the amount of possible customization potential. When evaluating the system you need to consider the following:

  • The total upfront cost of the base system:
  • The cost of additional customization specific to your house; and
  • The cost of video surveillance subscription

The Google Nest Aware Subscription

The Google Nest Secure Smart Devices

The Basics

The basic Nest Secure alarm system includes :

The Nest Guard base station gives you all you need to arm and disarm your alarm system.
Also, it’s the central hub for all of your Nest devices and doubles as a motion detector.
The Nest Detect Sensors are a clever security smart device that will adapt it’s working based on where it is installed. If it is installed on a window or on a door, it act as a contact sensor. And, if you install it on a wall or door it will functions as a motion sensor.

The Nest Tags are small key fobs that will give you an automated arming and disarming for your system. Those key fobs will make sure that you don’t need to run to your Nest Guard station to enter the code. As such, you can just use those fobs to disarm it.

The Google Nest Extras

Google is leveraging it’s own experience and Nest experience in the home automation industry to give you a wide range of possible customization that function on their own or as add-in to the Nest Secure Alarm system.

Google Nest Protect

This is a double specter smoke and carbon monoxide detector on steroid.
Obviously, it has much more feature then a normal smoke detector. As an example, it will tell you in a smooth plain English voice when and where the danger is instead of blaring only a loud alarm.

Also, all Nest Protect will synchronize themselves and this protection network will help you to safety during an emergency, lighting up to way out. This smooth light will also light up your way at night, when you need to go to the bathroom, as soon as it senses your presence.

As an added bonus, it will distinguish steam from smoke! It will not give you a false alarm each time you take a shower! And, if it detect only a small amount of smoke, it will warn you gently and emit a yellow light for you to verify if everything is alright.

Let’s talk about the apps feature for the Nest Protect.
To begin, you can disable a false alarm with your smartphone and you can test the entire system using the self-test integrated in the app. Finally, you can get the Nest Protect as a battery operated system or a hard-wired one.

Google Nest Thermostat

The only, the original, Nest flagship device, I give you: The Nest Thermostat!
Both the Google Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E offer you an, almost, total control over the climate in your home. And, you can exercise that control from anywhere anytime, where there is an internet connection, using the Nest app.

The “learning” feature comes from the fact that the thermostat actually adjust to your schedule and temperature preference, you only need to use it for 7 days for it to start adjusting to your routine. As such, in the long run, you will be always comfortable in your home without any action from you.

More Than Climate Control

Additionally, it will help you reduce your energy cost. Indeed, knowing your habits, it’s easier for the thermostat to be able to adjust the temperature when you are not there. The Nest app will also record your energy usage and will give you a monthly report that will help you understand your climate control energy consumption.

Even if the Nest Learning thermostat is only one part of your climate control system, it can send you notification when the temperature becomes too low and can be dangerous to your plumbing or when your heating system seems to go on a roll.

As an added benefit, the minimalist design will fit in any decor you might want to add to your home. When you enter the room and that the Thermostat detect your presence, it will automatically display the temperature, the time or outside weather for you to see.
Also, as an extra cost saving opportunity, you might want to check with your utility company, there is chance that they offer rebates on smart thermostat purchase.

Nest Temperature sensor

The Nest Temperature sensor is a companion to the Nest thermostat line. As you probably have noticed, the temperature in a house is not the same for all rooms. Using that temperature sensor, you can decide which room should be prioritized based on the time of day.

As an example, you might want your baby’s room to be always at a certain temperature, you simply need to install the temperature sensor in that room and set the temperature it need to be.

Google Nest Hello Video Doorbell

Having a good video doorbell is a good idea to complement your security system. Not only does it give you an additional view of your front door, which is a great boon in the event of a break-in, but it will also help you see who’s ringing your front door bell.

Another good feature, as with other video doorbell, is that, thank to the two way microphone, you can talk to the person on the other side of the door or you can record a message and have it played when someone comes looking for you.

Being part of the Google ecosystem, it also integrates with Google Home mini to announce that there is someone at the door. Where it really shines, it’s if you have a Google Nest Aware subscription. The added value is that the Video Doorbell will recognize a person as a family member or a friend. And, it will let you know so, be it through an alert or through a Google Home Mini announcement.
About those alerts, you can disable them for a na amount of time by setting a quiet time, like when you a sleeping and don’t want to be woken.

As such, it’s there to ensure the complete coverage of your home. Also, it has a battery backup to make sure that, even when you are out or power, your house is still protected.
